This is the role-playing game portion of “Maneater.” Players can unlock these upgrades and outfit their sharks, changing its look and giving it new abilities such as one that stuns enemies with electricity whenever it bites or a leach attack that heals the shark every time it attacks. Finding all the landmarks in an area gives players an important power-up that they can use to augment their shark.

More important than side quests or even the license plate collectibles, knocking out all the location spots is important in “Maneater.” The reason for that is the rewards. Keep on repeating until it’s dead and players gain experience and nutrient benefits from the battle.ģ. This should stun them enough for a few follow-up chomps. To defeat bigger foe, players have to dash away and quickly turn around and bite at the gator. When they attack, they sometimes flash yellow and that means they are vulnerable for a counterattack. Players have to outmaneuver the reptiles at a medium distance. It’s the dash, which lets players avoid the straight-line gator attacks. 1 move at player’s disposal isn’t the bite. Lure them out into the open areas of the bayou where the bull shark can take advantage of its agility. When facing most creatures, it’s best to do it in the open.
It can be downright frustrating early on because the bull shark is weak and creatures like alligators are strong. The combat system in “Maneater” isn’t the greatest. In fights, keep an eye out for the yellow flash on enemies. Eating provides players different nutrients and those nutrients will allow the bull shark to upgrade its abilities. In a certain sense, you are the fish version of Pac-Man but instead of eating pellets, you’re chowing down on grouper, catfish and any other animal that can fit in your mouth.Įating is important because it’s how players level up early on. As young bull shark in “Maneater,” expect to devour everything in sight. With that said, the game doesn’t teach you much early on and I had to figure things out on my own. Credit that to the humor and voice work of comedian Chris Parnell. At times, “Maneater” can feel like a grind and other moments it will make players laugh. I know this first hand as I started the game this week and discovered a few lessons in my few hours. It’s essentially a game for those who want to fantasize about being the Great White from “Jaws.”īut the journey from newborn pup to oceanic masterhood takes a long time. Instead of a criminal or a super soldier, players take on the role of a bull shark. “Maneater” is one of the more unique open-world games to come along in a while.
